What to remember
- You do not need to know which surgeon or procedure you need before contacting the practice.
- A consultation may recommend testing, medical treatment, observation, another specialist, or surgery.
- Insurance referral and authorization rules vary by plan.
- Emergency symptoms require 911 or the nearest emergency department.
01 · Appointments
Beginning care
The NuSelf team can help arrange a useful starting visit when you describe the main concern, known diagnosis, previous care, preferred office, and timing. The secure two-minute guide can also organize your concerns before you choose a next step.
Do I need a diagnosis before I make an appointment?
No. Begin with what you are experiencing, an abnormal result, a diagnosis you were given, a proposed procedure, or a concern after previous care.
Do I need a referral?
That depends on your insurance plan and visit type. Call your plan and NuSelf to confirm before the appointment.
Can I request a specific physician?
Yes. Availability, office, and the reason for consultation determine the appointment options.
Does scheduling a consultation mean I am agreeing to surgery?
No. The purpose is to clarify the diagnosis, reasonable options, timing, and next step.
02 · Records
Making the first visit more useful
What records should I bring?
Bring relevant imaging reports and image access, endoscopy or pathology reports, prior operation reports, hospital notes, a medication list, allergies, and referral documents.
Why is the actual imaging study useful if I have the report?
The report summarizes findings, while the images can show anatomy the surgeon needs for planning or a second opinion. Ask how to transfer both securely.
What is most important after a previous operation?
The original operation report, later procedure reports, mesh or device information, complication records, and recent imaging are especially useful.
Can I email records?
Call NuSelf to confirm the approved secure delivery method. Do not send sensitive records to an unconfirmed ordinary email address.
03 · Diagnosis & treatment
Understanding the recommendation
Will every condition be treated with surgery?
No. The next step can include more evaluation, observation, medical management, another specialist, an office procedure, endoscopy, or surgery.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes. NuSelf evaluates questions about a diagnosis, proposed operation, recurrence, complex anatomy, and concerns after previous general or bariatric care.
Does NuSelf use robotic surgery for every eligible procedure?
No single approach fits every patient. The surgeon chooses among open, laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and office techniques according to the condition, anatomy, prior care, and goals.
How quickly will treatment happen?
Urgency depends on symptoms, diagnosis, test results, and safety. The procedure guides explain common timing categories, while your evaluation determines what applies to you.
04 · Insurance & cost
Before a scheduled service
Does benefit verification guarantee payment?
No. The health plan makes the final claim decision after applying eligibility, network, authorization, medical-necessity, coding, and contract rules.
Why can a surgery produce several bills?
The surgeon, facility, anesthesia group, pathology, imaging, laboratory, and other participants may be separate organizations.
Can I request a self-pay estimate?
Yes. Ask which services and organizations the estimate includes and what could change the amount. Qualifying uninsured or self-pay patients generally have federal good-faith-estimate rights for scheduled care.
What happens if insurance changes before the procedure?
Tell NuSelf immediately. Network, referral, authorization, prerequisites, and cost may all need to be checked again.
05 · Preparation & recovery
Common practical questions
Should I stop a prescription before surgery?
Only after receiving instructions from the surgical, anesthesia, and prescribing teams. Do not make the change on your own.
When can I drive after surgery?
When anesthesia and sedating medicine no longer impair you, pain and movement allow a safe emergency reaction, and the surgeon’s procedure-specific restriction has been met.
When can I return to work or exercise?
Timing depends on the operation, healing, fatigue, commute, and physical demands. Follow the written plan and ask for staged restrictions when needed.
Who should I call about a postoperative concern?
Call the surgical team using the instructions provided. Do not wait for a portal reply when the concern is urgent. Call 911 for an emergency.
06 · Explore My Care Options
The secure guided experience
What does the two-minute guide provide?
It organizes your concerns into relevant care options, practical next steps, physician information, resources, and scheduling connections inside a private portal.
Does the guide diagnose me?
No. It helps organize a starting point and urgency. A clinician evaluates, diagnoses, and recommends treatment.
When is an account required?
Public questions can be answered before sign-in. Non-emergency personalized results are shown only after secure account access.
What should I do if the questions suggest an emergency?
Follow the emergency direction immediately. Emergency safety guidance is not held behind an account gate.
This guide provides general education. Your physician, surgical facility, and discharge instructions determine what applies to your health and procedure.
